Learn to Weave

I love platform training!  It is amazing how useful they can be to help train new behaviours.  I did a session with Michelle Pouliot at Clicker Expo in January where we started on a few behaviours that I have decided I need to finish up teaching.  Here is a video with Stella learning to weave.  This is a fun trick but I am also hoping to use in as a heeling game to keep things interesting for Stella.

  1. Awesome work! What a great idea to use the platforms (altho I'm not sure why!).

    1. The platforms prevent having to lure the dog through and into position. It enables me to have the same basic body position during the learning phase which become the cue instead of trying to fade the lure.

  2. I'm glad Sylvia asked about the platforms...so I didn't have to. She is doing really well! What a little smartie! :-)

    1. It is a ground raw food mix. She is pretty food motivated :).

  4. I like that platform idea. I wonder what I can make one out of, sure makes position stuff seem easier. I have started to teach this to my girl too, she picked it up pretty quick but have not done too much in a row. I will have to keep working at it. What are you feeding yours? I love using the food tubes when doing a lot of trick training, and Luna loves it too.

    1. If you google how to make dog training platforms you should find lots of information. They can be as easy as foam with duct tape. I purchased mine from Michelle Pouliot. The feeding I was using in the video is a ground raw food but she usually works for any food.

  5. Hi there, I'm also in the heeling games class. I love the way you are teaching this. your body cue is very different than mine and I love yours. It has me thinking.... My dog is a huge forger. I think I'm going to use your method of leg weaves to 'correct' that habit. I think in order to do the weaves the way you are doing them (leg back instead of to the side) then the dog cannot forge AND see the cue. So, watch for me in the +R reinforcement facebook page as I'm sure I'll be posting stuff about it. ThANKS for sharing!
